The Papers Are Done. Here Is What Actually Helps Now
The written papers are finished, the markers have them now, and schools are winding down. For the first time since January, there is nothing to revise for.
This is also the moment many families reach for a stack of assessment books, determined to get ahead. Before you do, here is what the next few weeks are actually for.
Rest comes first, and it is not wasted time
A child who has just come through an exam season is tired in a way that does not always show. Give it a week or two of genuinely nothing: no drills, no worksheets, no casual quizzing at dinner. A tired brain does not form new habits, and the habits are what the holidays are for.
Keep every marked paper
Before anything gets thrown out in the end-of-year clear-up, rescue the marked scripts — school papers, prelims, weighted assessments, all of them. They are the most personal record that exists of what your child actually gets wrong. A generic assessment book practises everything; the marked papers tell you the five things worth practising. We will look at how to turn them into an error log later this week.
Pick one habit, not five
The holiday plan that survives past the first week is always the small one. One habit, held daily, beats a timetable of five that collapses by November. If you choose only one, make it reading: twenty minutes a day, a book your child actually wants to read. Reading feeds vocabulary, comprehension, writing and even oral — no workbook covers that much ground.
For the families with a big year coming
If your child starts P6 in January, or begins their final Secondary year, the weeks ahead are quietly valuable — not for syllabus content, but for arriving in January with the groundwork done: a reading habit already running, sentence accuracy improving, and a clear picture of their repeat errors. That is the series we are running here over the coming week — one short piece each morning, alternating between Primary and Secondary.
In the meantime, the 25 free practice sheets are there whenever you want them — direct download, no sign-up, no checkout.
