Planned Response: 5 Openings That Impress in the First 20 Seconds (O-Level & N(A) Oral)

In the Planned Response section of the O-Level and N(A) English oral, the first twenty seconds do a disproportionate amount of work. Examiners form an early impression of your fluency and organisation — and a strong opening buys you confidence for everything that follows. The problem is that most students open the same way: “I think that…” followed by a slow circle towards the point.

Here are five openings that signal, from the very first sentence, that you have planned your response and know where it is going.

1. The direct stand

“My view on this is clear: …” Then state it in one sentence. No warm-up, no apology. This works because it shows the examiner you used your preparation time to decide, not just to worry.

2. The signpost

“There are two things I want to say about this — one about why it happens, and one about what we can do.” You have just handed the examiner a map of your answer. Even if your second point wobbles, the structure earns credit.

3. The observation

“What struck me most about this was…” This opening ties your response directly to the stimulus, which examiners reward — it proves you engaged with what you were shown rather than delivering a rehearsed speech.

4. The personal doorway

“This is something I have seen in my own school, so I feel quite strongly about it.” Personal connection early makes everything after it sound genuine — and genuine responses are easier to sustain than performed ones.

5. The balanced entry

“I can see both sides here, but on balance I believe…” Use this only when you genuinely intend to weigh both sides — it promises maturity, and you must deliver it. When it lands, it is the most impressive opening of the five.

How to practise this week

Pick one past-style prompt each day. Give yourself your planning time, choose one of the five openings, and deliver the first thirty seconds out loud — just the opening. Then do it again with a different opening. You are training your mouth, not your memory: by exam day, starting strongly should feel automatic.
