Reading Aloud at PSLE: Six Habits That Quietly Cost Marks

Reading Aloud looks like the easy part of the PSLE Oral, which is exactly why it goes under-practised. Marks are rarely lost through dramatic mistakes. They leak away through small habits nobody has pointed out.

Here are the six we see most, and the fix for each.

The six, and what to do

1. Starting before settling
The first two lines come out rushed and the nerves stay audible. Fix: a deliberate two-second pause before the first word.

2. Ignoring the full stops
Sentences run together and meaning disappears. Fix: a small breath at every full stop, practised for a week.

3. Dropping word endings
Walked becomes walk. Things becomes thing. Fix: read a page of past-tense verbs aloud, landing every ending.

4. One volume throughout
A chase scene read like a garden description. Fix: mark two places in the passage to lift, and two to soften.

5. Speeding up when unsure
Rushing a hard word draws more attention, not less. Fix: slow slightly and say it clearly.

6. Never looking up
Eyes locked to the page sounds disconnected. Fix: one glance up at a full stop, once or twice only.

The two-week self-check

Record one passage a night. Do not correct during the reading — play it back and let your child mark their own sheet. Self-noticing sticks far better than being told.

Print this. Tick after each recording.

Did I pause before starting?
Two seconds, breathing settled.

Did I breathe at every full stop?
Or did sentences run together?

Did my endings land?
-ed and -s, every time.

Did my voice change anywhere?
Name the place it did.

Did I slow down for hard words?
Or speed past them?

Did I look up at all?
Once or twice is enough.
