Visual Text: The Comprehension Marks Most Candidates Give Away
The visual text is the first thing in Paper 2 and it looks like a gift — a poster or advertisement with far less to read than the passages that follow. Candidates relax, answer quickly, and hand back marks.

Almost every question is one of those three wearing a different hat.
Answer the how, not the what
The commonest loss is describing the image instead of explaining its effect.
Describing versus explaining
Describes: The poster shows a child looking at an empty plate.
Explains: The empty plate and the child’s downward gaze make the reader feel the hunger is immediate and personal, which pushes them towards donating rather than simply sympathising.
The second answer names the technique, then the effect, then the intended response. That three-step shape fits almost every visual text question.

Use the whole page
- Headline — usually carries the main message and often a pun or play on words.
- Colour — ask what feeling it produces, not what it is.
- Small print — the details at the bottom often answer the specific-fact questions.
- Layout — what your eye reaches first is a deliberate choice.
Give this section the same care as the passages. It carries real marks and, unlike the rest of Paper 2, the technique behind it can be learnt in an afternoon.
