The Week Before PSLE Oral: What to Do, and What to Stop Doing

The final week is where well-meaning preparation starts doing harm. New material this late does not get absorbed; it just crowds out what your child already knows.

Here is the week, day by day, and the list of things worth stopping.

The final seven days

Seven and six days before
One recorded passage each night. Familiar material only. Ten minutes.

Five and four days before
One mock: passage plus three conversation questions. Then stop for the night.

Three days before
Light night. One passage, no conversation practice. Early bed.

Two days before
Final mock, done calmly and in one go. No feedback beyond one thing done well.

The day before
One familiar passage, read once. Nothing else. Lay out the uniform and sleep early.

What to stop doing

  • Stop adding vocabulary. A word learnt this week will not arrive under pressure.
  • Stop running mock orals every night. Two in the final week is plenty. More produces fatigue, not fluency.
  • Stop correcting mid-sentence. It trains hesitation at exactly the wrong moment.
  • Stop discussing the exam at meals. Children need hours in the day when it is not mentioned.

What to say on the morning

Two sentences, then stop

You have practised this properly. Just talk like you talk to me.If you go blank, take a second and start again. That is allowed.

Nothing about marks. Nothing about what to remember. A child who walks in rested and unhurried will sound better than one who was still drilling at ten o’clock the night before — and by this point, sounding like themselves is the whole objective.

Ready-made passages, pictures and question banks for the final fortnight.
