Cohesion: The Skill the Language Bands Actually Reward
Ask students what lifts a writing script into the top Language band and most will say vocabulary — rarer words, more impressive phrases. The band descriptors say something quieter: alongside accuracy, what the ladder of bands rewards is cohesion — first within a paragraph, then between paragraphs, and at the top, across the whole response.
Cohesion is simply whether the writing holds together: whether each sentence belongs where it is, and whether the reader is carried from one idea to the next without jolts. It is a skill, it is learnable, and the quiet weeks before the new school year are a good time to learn it.
Within a paragraph: every sentence leans on the last
In a cohesive paragraph, each sentence picks up something from the one before — a repeated idea, a pronoun pointing back, a consequence of what was just said. Test any paragraph by asking of each sentence: what in the previous sentence does this connect to? If the answer is “nothing”, the sentence belongs elsewhere — or the link needs writing in.
Between paragraphs: open by touching the previous idea
Weak scripts change subject at every paragraph break, as if starting again. Strong ones build a bridge in the first line: That confidence did not last. / The second reason runs deeper. Each opener touches what came before while turning to what comes next. One bridging sentence per paragraph is the single cheapest upgrade available to most Secondary writers.
Connectives are hinges, not decorations
Sprinkling furthermore, moreover, in addition through a script does not create cohesion — markers see through it immediately, because the words claim connections the ideas do not have. Use a connective only when it tells the truth: however when something genuinely turns, because when one thing genuinely causes another. Three honest connectives beat ten ornamental ones.
One exercise to build it
Take any old composition. Cut the paragraphs apart — literally, with scissors, or in a document — shuffle them, and try to reassemble the piece a day later. If the order is hard to recover, the piece lacked cohesion: nothing in each paragraph pointed to the next. Rewrite the openers until the order becomes obvious. Do this with three old scripts and the habit starts appearing in new writing on its own.
Accuracy still comes first — cohesion built on broken sentences lifts nothing. The Sentence Repair Kit handles that layer, one levelled edition per stream.
