The Night Before PSLE English: For the Child and the Parent
Tomorrow is English — Paper 1 and Paper 2. Tonight is not for learning anything new. The work is done. Tonight is for four small things, and for leaving the rest alone.
For the child
- Pack now. Entry proof, two pens that work, water. Bag by the door.
- Read one thing. One strong composition opening, or one situational writing answer that uses the given information properly. One, not five.
- Say the four checks. Use the given information. Answer every part. Join sentences. Hold tense. That is your last four minutes tomorrow, decided tonight.
- Sleep at the normal time. A rested writer holds tense. A tired one does not.
Skip
- New vocabulary lists. A word learnt tonight is a word used wrongly tomorrow.
- Model compositions at bedtime. Reading someone else’s story does not improve yours.
- Any full paper.
For the parent
Most of what a parent wants to say tonight is pressure wearing the clothes of encouragement. “You’ve worked so hard, I know you’ll do well” tells a child that a lot is riding on tomorrow.
Things that help more:
- “What time do you want to leave in the morning?” — practical, calm, hands them control.
- “Whatever happens tomorrow, dinner is your choice on Thursday.” — the day has an after.
- Nothing. Sit with them while they pack. Presence is not pressure.
And in the morning: breakfast, no last-minute quizzing in the car, and let the last thing they hear from you be ordinary.
Tomorrow in three lines
- Read the whole question. Number its parts. Then write.
- Two minutes of planning. Four lines. Then the story.
- Four minutes at the end, one check at a time.
