Ten Minutes a Night: A Parent’s PSLE Oral Routine for August
You do not need to be an English teacher to help your child prepare for the PSLE Oral. You need a routine you can keep, and the discipline not to over-correct.
Here is one that takes ten minutes. The words in the box are the whole script — you can read them straight off the screen.
Minutes 1–4 — one passage, read aloud
You say“Read this out to me. I am going to record it, and I am not going to say anything while you read.”
Then“Nothing. Not one correction, however tempting.”
Minutes 5–6 — play it back
You say“Have a listen. What would you change?”
If they say nothing“Was there anywhere you went a bit fast?”
Never say“You rushed. You mumbled. You forgot the full stops.”
This is the part most parents skip, and it is the part that does the work. A child who identifies their own rushed pace will fix it. A child who is told they rushed feels told off and fixes nothing.
Minutes 7–10 — one picture, two questions
You say“Look at this photo. What do you think is happening, and why?”
Then“Would you want to be there? Tell me in four parts.”
You check“Did they say what they think, why, something from their own life, and one wider thought?”
Any photo on your phone works. You do not need to judge the content — you only need to check the four parts were there.
Three rules for parents
- Do not correct mid-sentence. It teaches hesitation, and hesitation costs more than the error you were fixing.
- Do not add new material in the final week. Confidence beats coverage this close.
- Stop at ten minutes, even when it is going well. The routine survives because it is short.
A tired child practising ten minutes every night will outperform a child doing an hour every Sunday. Consistency is the whole strategy.
Ready-made passages, pictures and question banks — so you are not inventing material each night.
