PSLE Composition: The Three-Sentence Opening That Hooks Any Marker

Ask any experienced marker and they will tell you: the first paragraph sets the expectation for everything after it. Most PSLE compositions open the same way — “It was a sunny day…” — and quietly ask the marker to expect an average script. Here is a three-sentence pattern that does the opposite, and works for almost any picture prompt.

Sentence 1: start inside the action

Skip the weather. Begin at the moment something is already happening. “The glass jar slipped through my fingers before I could even shout.”

Sentence 2: show the feeling in the body

Not “I was scared” — show it. “My stomach dropped as the pieces skidded across Grandma’s kitchen floor.”

Sentence 3: open a question the reader must answer

Give the marker a reason to keep reading. “How was I going to explain that her favourite jar — the one from her wedding — was gone?”

Action, feeling, question. Three sentences, and the marker is inside the story with you. Practise it on three different pictures this week — the pattern transfers every time.
