PSLE English Oral: How to Shine in Reading Aloud and the Conversation

The PSLE English oral is short, but it carries real weight — and it is one of the most scoreable parts of the paper once your child knows what to expect. The secret is not talking more. It is speaking clearly and answering in full ideas. Here is how to shine in both parts.

The two parts of the PSLE oral

  • Reading Aloud: your child reads a short passage to the examiner.
  • Stimulus-Based Conversation: they look at a picture or video, then answer questions about it.

There is a little preparation time before they begin. Used well, that minute makes all the difference.

Reading aloud: slow down and mean it

Reading aloud is not a race. The examiner wants to hear that your child understands the passage.

  • Glance through the passage first so no word is a surprise.
  • Pause at full stops and commas — don’t run sentences together.
  • Let your voice rise and fall with the meaning, so it sounds natural.

The conversation: answer in full ideas

One-word answers lose marks. The examiner wants a real reply. A simple way to stay full is:

  1. Give your answer.
  2. Add a reason — “because…”.
  3. Add a quick example from your own life.

Three short steps, and a one-line answer becomes a confident one.

Practise the right way at home

Once a day, have your child read a short passage aloud and record it. Then show them any photo and ask, “What is happening here? Have you ever felt the same?” A few minutes daily builds calm, clear speakers by exam day.
