350 to 500 Words Means Develop, Not Pad

Section C asks for 350 to 500 words. Students treat the lower number as a target and the upper as a ceiling, and write accordingly. That misreads what the range is for.

What the range means

The top Content band wants all aspects of the task developed in detail. Development takes words. The range tells you roughly how many words proper development needs. It does not tell you to fill space.

Padding versus development

Padding: “In this modern day and age, in today’s society, it is undeniable that many people would agree that…” Twenty words, no content. Clarity of expression is a Language criterion; padding works against it.

Development: “Talent shows reward luck. The same singer, on a different night with a different judge, might not make the first round — and the viewers never see those nights.” Thirty words, one point, one example, one consequence.

The signs of padding

  • A sentence that says what the next sentence will say.
  • Adjectives in stacks of three.
  • Openers like in conclusion, to sum up, all in all followed by a repeat of the introduction.
  • A point made once in paragraph two and again, slightly reworded, in paragraph four.

If you are short

Do not add words. Add a detail. Find the aspect of the task you covered thinnest and give it one concrete example. That is development, and it is what the extra words are for.
