O-Level English: Four Weeks Out, Here Is the Plan

O-Level English Paper 1 is Monday 19 October. Four weeks is enough to change how you write, but only if the time goes where the marks are.

Where the marks are

In both writing sections, the split is 10 for content or task fulfilment and 20 for language. Language means organisation, clarity and accuracy. It does not mean difficult words. Most candidates spend four weeks on the ten.

Week 1 — sentence control

One paragraph a day. Take four short sentences and join them into one or two. Check the joined version holds its tense and its subject–verb agreement. This is the Language band ladder — within paragraphs first.

Week 2 — Situational Writing

Two full answers, spaced apart. Before each, underline every piece of given information. After each, check that every reason you gave came from the stimulus. Using the given information is a stated criterion; invented reasons are not credited.

Week 3 — Continuous Writing

Two full essays, one argumentative and one recount or descriptive. Number the parts of each question before writing. Read only the first sentence of each paragraph afterwards — do they connect? That is the between-paragraphs rung of the ladder.

Week 4 — editing and the checks

Editing is 10 marks from a closed list of grammar error types. Ten minutes a day on those six types. And rehearse the four final checks until they are automatic: tense, agreement, joins, every part.

What not to do

Vocabulary lists. A long word used wrongly costs accuracy marks. Precision beats difficulty at every band.

Mark allocations from the SEAB GCE O-Level English Language (1184) syllabus, 2026.
