Spoken English Practice

The paper children practise least

Oral carries marks nobody rehearses for. Fix that in ten minutes a night.

Your child answers a real exam-style question out loud. Oral Coach responds the way an examiner would — what the answer was missing, and the stronger version of the same idea.

Start practising →See how it responds

Built on the current SEAB oral formats for PSLE, N(T), N(A) and O Level.

Nobody can practise oral alone

Comprehension can be done at the table with a pen. Oral cannot — it needs someone to ask the question, listen, and say what was thin about the answer. Most children arrive at the oral having rehearsed it twice, in the week before. It is the one paper where a few nights of real practice still moves the mark.

The method: V–R–P–E

A weak answer gives an opinion and stops. A strong one has four parts, in order. Every response is coached against them.

V

View

Answer the actual question first, in one clear sentence. Do not circle it.

R

Reason

Give the because. One reason developed properly, not three named and dropped.

P

Personal experience

Something that actually happened to you. This is where marks are won.

E

Extension

Widen it — what it means for others, or what should change. This is what separates a good answer from a full one.

Every level, its own paper

The oral papers are not the same, and material written for one is wrong for another.

What coaching looks like

Shortened, from a Secondary 4 Spoken Interaction question.

Oral Coach · Response

“Should students be allowed to use their phones during recess?”

What the answer gave

“Yes, I think so, because it is our own time and we can relax. Also it is quite convenient.” A view and half a reason, in nine seconds.

What was missing

No personal experience, so nothing in the answer is yours. No extension, so it never reaches past your own convenience. Two of the four parts absent — the ceiling stays low however fluently it is said.

The same view, developed

“Yes — recess is our own time, and phones are how most of us actually rest. Last term my class sat in silence at lunch because half of us were too tired to talk; the ones on their phones came back to lessons calmer than the rest of us. But I would keep it to recess only. If phones creep into lessons, the same thing that helps us switch off starts stopping us switching on.”

One thing to fix tonight

You stopped after the reason. Add a real example every single time — even a small one. Aim for forty seconds, not ten.

What it costs

Oral coaching at a centre is charged by the hour. This is charged by the answer, and can be done any night of the week.

You do not have to be the examiner

You do not need to know the criteria, and you do not need to speak perfect English yourself. The coaching names what was missing in ordinary words. Your part is to be in the room, so your child says the answer out loud to a person rather than reading it silently in their head.

Ten minutes a night, four nights a week, is more oral practice than most candidates get all year.

Questions

What does one credit cover?

One coached question — the answer, what it was missing, and a stronger version of the same view. Credits do not expire.

Does my child need to speak into it?

Answers can be spoken or typed. Speaking is the whole point of the paper, so say the answer out loud first, every time.

Is the content right for our level?

Yes — the question formats follow the current SEAB papers, and they differ by level. Reading Aloud appears in PSLE and N(T) only; N(A) and O Level use a Planned Response instead.

Will this replace a tutor?

It replaces the practice a tutor cannot give you — nightly, unlimited, without booking. It is a rehearsal tool, not an official assessment.

Ten minutes tonight

One question, spoken out loud, coached properly. That is more than most candidates do in a month.
