Feedback that arrives a week late changes nothing

A composition written on Sunday and returned the following Friday is a graded piece of paper, not teaching. The child has already moved on. Improvement happens in the twenty minutes after writing — while the sentences are still warm and the rewrite is still possible.

What comes back

Not a grade and a smiley face. Five things a marker would actually tell you.

Content and Language, scored apart

Two separate marks, because they fail for different reasons. A fluent essay that answered the wrong question loses Content, not Language.

The band, and why

Band placement with the specific reason it sits there — not a vague note about needing more detail.

The lines costing marks

Quoted from the script and named: the full-stopped fragment, the repeated opener, the paragraph that wandered.

One rewrite instruction

The single change that moves the mark most. Not fifteen corrections a tired child will ignore.

A model paragraph

The same idea, written the way it should have been, so the standard is visible rather than described.

How it works

1

Add the essay

Type it, paste it, or photograph the handwritten page.

2

Choose the level

PSLE, N(T), N(A) or O Level. The criteria change with the paper.

3

Read the report

Back in under a minute, in plain English a child can act on.

A sample report

Shortened, from a Primary 6 narrative on a difficult decision.

Why Content sits here

The decision is described at length, but never actually made. Two paragraphs weigh the choice; none show it taken or its result. The question asked for the outcome.

Costing marks — line 14

“Because I was scared of what my friends would say.” A subordinate clause given a full stop. It happens four times; each one reads as an unfinished sentence.

Do this in the rewrite

Cut the second paragraph of deliberation. Use those lines to show the decision happening, and what changed afterwards.

Model — the same moment, rewritten

I handed the wallet to the counter and said nothing else. Walking out, my ears were still hot, but the weight in my bag was gone.

What it costs

Marking at a centre runs from forty dollars a script, returned days later. Compass is priced so a child can write weekly.

For parents who cannot mark English themselves

You do not need to know the criteria to use this. The report names what is wrong, in ordinary words, and gives one instruction. Your job is to sit beside your child while they do the rewrite — that is the part that moves the mark.

Nothing is stored beyond your own account, and no essay is ever shared or published.

Questions

What is a credit?

One credit marks one essay and returns one full report. Credits do not expire, so a pack can be used across a whole year.

Which levels does it mark?

PSLE Continuous Writing, N(T), N(A) and O Level. Each is marked against that paper’s own criteria — the standards are not interchangeable.

Can it read handwriting?

Yes. Photograph the page in good light with the whole script in frame. Clear handwriting reads more accurately than cramped writing.

Is a report the same as a teacher’s mark?

It applies the same criteria consistently and instantly, which is what makes weekly practice possible. It is a tool for improving drafts, not an official grade.
